Yes, I will photograph babies and children as the main subjects of the session, but under very strict circumstances.
My career in photography began by working for companies that had portrait studios inside major retailers. Those companies had their rules and regulations on how sessions where shot and how products were sold. They had time limits, pose limits, and sales quotas that all had to be met. The companies didn't care that a child might have a fear of strangers and need some time to get to know the person behind the camera, and because of the time limitations, parents would become understandably frustrated when their child wasn't cooperating with the photographer.
In those days of my career, I had many sleepless nights because of the stress from the entire situation and eventually decided to focus on weddings. That being said, I did enjoy photographing children during that time, and have decided that I want to provide portrait sessions for kids that actually make everyone involved happy and comfortable.
Portrait sessions will take place in a location at which the child is familiar. A park, your backyard, your garage, your living room, Grandma and/or Grandpa's farm... wherever they're comfortable. I do not have an indoor studio space at this time, so instead of you coming to me, I will come to you!
Portrait sessions will have no set time limit. If I'm working with a newborn that's awake when I get there but we eventually want sleeping baby photos, then we will hang out until nap time and start back up once the little one has passed out. If a fussy toddler needs a snack, then we'll take a break and have a snack.
Portrait sessions are just portrait sessions! Because I technically don't sell products, I don't have to worry about having time for a sales pitch after the shoot. You'll be able to download all the photos from your password protected gallery where you can also order prints and products through SmugMug. I do not set the prices, produce the products, or profit from those sales (this is to keep your costs low!).
Portrait session props will be provided by the client. I will provide backdrops and basic posing objects, but any additional decorations or props must be provided by the client. Being entirely honest, I don't have the space or funds to store, purchase, and maintain a wide variety of props.
Portrait sessions will be safe! One thing I did learn from the retail portrait studios is that a safe session is a happy session. While I welcome pose suggestions during a session, I will only allow poses I feel are safe for a child. For babies, this might mean not trying to force their tiny bodies into a pose they just don't want to be in. For toddlers and older children, this might mean one foot needs to be able to touch the ground, so sitting on a tall chair might not be safe (depending on the chair). I also require one adult per child that is 5 years old or younger to be present for the session. For example, a session featuring a 6 year old, a 2 year old, and a newborn would require 2 adults. This allows each adult to assist in posing and being close to the youngest subjects in case they wiggle during the poses, while still keeping an eye on the older child. If a session includes 3 children that are 5 years old or younger, 3 adults would be required for the session.
Thank you for understanding.
You will receive full resolution JPGs of almost all of the photos taken during an event or portrait session. Only the blinkies and blurries will be removed before being uploaded to your password protected online gallery. Each image will be color corrected and edited for exposure and contrast. I typically pick a few of my favorite images and do some fun Lightroom effects.
Weddings will receive a thumb drive, however, any online gallery has the option to directly download all the photos straight from the website.
If you choose to include raw video to your wedding services, you will recieve every video file as it is created in the camera and an additional video file of all the video files pieced together for one big video.
No, but also yes.
When I started my career in 2004, I sold prints and albums and charged less for my fees to come to the event. But this was back when professional quality photos were only available from select companies and the prices per print were very high. Now, professional quality photos can be printed from tons of websites, and even Walgreens and Walmart can provide very nice prints (sometimes).
Wedding albums and photo books can take a lot of time for anyone to make, and companies like Shutterfly have made that process a little easier and offer quality books in a lot of sizes for great prices. And being completely honest, the prices I would have to charge for a similar product would be higher than I would be comfortable charging.
That being said, the password protected galleries do have a SHOP option where you can order prints and products. However, I do not set those prices, produce the products, or profit from those sales. That is a service offered through SmugMug, so any issues with orders through the gallery will need to be addressed with SmugMug, as I do not have access to order information.
I ask for two weeks to edit the photos before uploading them to the password protected gallery. However, my actual turn around time is usually less than a week. Your print release will be emailed to you when I notify you that the gallery is online.
If you are a wedding photography client, your thumb drive will be mailed to you once you confirm your mailing address after you've been given access to your password protected gallery. If you do not confirm your mailing address, I'll just assume you don't want the thumb drive.
